Meeting with Beatriz Dominguez Gil

For over 30 years, Spain has maintained its position as a world leader in organ transplantation. Recommended by the World Health Organization, the Spanish model bases its success on a multidisciplinary approach that addresses legal, technical, and economic aspects.

We discussed all of this with Beatriz Dominguez Gil, its director, who indicated that Spain has a rate of 51.9 deceased donors per million inhabitants and more than 6,300 transplants performed in 2025, well above the rest of the world.

Spanish legislation establishes that all people are donors unless they have expressed otherwise, but when applying this law, a procedure is established to respect the deceased’s wishes. The donor card, a symbolic document that serves as written testimony of the wish to donate after death, can be downloaded from the “You Are Perfect for Others” campaign website.
